Allergic Reactions to Eyelash Extensions – Can I Still Get Them?

I first heard about eyelash extensions back in 2011 when they were still relatively new to Aussie shores. They were a popular beauty treatment in Russia, Japan and had been gaining traction in the US before coming to Australia. When I learned a little about them, I booked myself in for a treatment and was HOOKED. I completed my training that same year and have been in the industry ever since.

Now the reason I’m telling you all of this is that I want you to know that this advice is backed by experience. The short answer to the question “I had an allergic reaction to eyelash extensions – should I get them again?” is a firm no.

I break this news to allergic women every week and it really makes me sad to have to tell them this….if you’ve ever had a reaction to lash glue, you simply cannot get lashes again.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve had lash extensions for years and then randomly react once – reacting that one time means that an allergy to the main ingredient in the adhesive (cyanoacrylate) has developed and sadly you will react again.

At The Lash Spa, we strictly do not apply lashes to any client who has previously experienced a reaction. The risk for us and for the client is just not worth it – we don’t want to be responsible for any discomfort to our clients.

We have been down that road before with clients who come in begging for us to try when they have known allergies. They think the reaction was caused by cheap glue from the previous salon or unsafe hygiene practices. And it’s true that we use the highest quality glues and have a 4 stage sterilisation process to ensure all our tools are completely sterile – but the issue is with the glue – and the main ingredient is always the same.

Women get upset when I break the news to them that we won’t perform a patch test for clients who have previously reacted. The reason is – we are very strict on not getting involved with allergies after going down that road a few years ago with clients who passed the patch test and then still had allergic reactions once the lashes were on – it’s just so unpredictable!

For a salon owner, you can imagine the stress of this situation…

A lady calls and says she’s unsure if she is allergic and would like a patch test. I agree and invite the lady in for a complimentary consultation, we apply some adhesive behind her ear and there is no reaction. We then apply a few lashes to the outer corners of her eyes and leave it a few days…no reaction. YAY!

THEN, we apply a full set of lashes and sadly the client reacts. We invite her in for a complimentary removal of the lashes which is usually a paid appointment. She wants to come in at 7am because she’s uncomfortable – and I have to tell her we’re booked solid for a few days but I’ll see what I can do. I desperately arrange an after-hours babysitter for my son – at the appointment she says she doesn’t want them removed anymore and leaves after I apply saline solution to the lashes to cleanse them. I give her a complimentary bottle of saline solution so she can clean them at home.

The client calls again the next day, very distressed and upset (angry with me) because the reaction is now worse and once again wants to come in ASAP. I arrange a sitter for my baby again. The removal takes over an hour because we have to be extra gentle due to the reaction. Then the client asks for a full refund which I felt too awkward to refuse despite the client having 3 appointments, fully understanding that the reaction was due to an allergy and outside our control, and receiving multiple products.

You can see how after going through this experience and others just like it multiple times, that we simply don’t take the risk of working with allergic clients. An alternative to eyelash extensions is growth serum called Eyenvy (we are stockists if you’d like to purchase some) – it won’t give you the instant and dramatic results of extensions, but it promises to lengthen and thicken up your natural lashes over time.

I wish you luck with your lash journey and do sincerely apologise again if you were trying to get in for an appointment and we said no. We really have your best interests at heart as well as needing to protect ourselves too.

Should I get Mega Volume lashes?

At The Lash Spa, we specialise in natural lashes that can be worn forever, and while we do offer a full volume 6D lash package where a ‘boost’ can be added, this would only be available to those with strong, healthy natural lashes so that we can ensure damage doesn’t occur.

This is why we don’t offer ‘mega volume’ lashes. Mega volume can damage the natural lash and people who prefer this lash extension technique must take regular breaks from eyelash extensions…

Basically what happens is the mega volume extensions will be so heavy that they’ll pull your natural lashes right of the eyelid, so when you come in for infills there simply won’t be nearly enough natural lashes to add extensions to. This is why the ‘break’ period needs to be enforced (because it’s not possible to add extensions to nothing!)

Mega volume lashes can look like one big fluffy piece. Some people love this style however we do not offer this at The Lash Spa.

Why Mega Volume lashes aren’t offered at The Lash Spa

We believe mega volume lashes to be damaging because they are extremely long and thick. They weigh your natural eyelashes down causing them to weaken your natural lashes and thinning them out, or worst-case scenario pulling out your natural lashes as they are too heavy and cannot take the weight, sometimes leaving scarring on the eyelid and inhibiting future lash growth.

These are the style of eyelash extension that we offer – this is a full volume 6D made with 0.07 fans. These can be worn forever and enhance your natural beauty[

We are so strict on the lash health of our clients that we regularly turn away clients who request the extreme volume style of lash – we want our customers to be happy and we believe that keeping our client’s lashes in good condition is extremely important, both for our clients happiness and of course our own reputation.

We will never compromise your lash health and will only ever extend the length and volume to what your natural lashes can handle.

Why Eyelash Extension Consultations Are ESSENTIAL at The Lash Spa

Can you imagine walking into a hairdresser, saying hello and then sitting in the chair without telling the stylist what to do.

They grab a pair of scissors and a bowl of colour and just start working.

How weird would that be??

Well, this is exactly what’s happening in the lash industry! It’s extremely common practice for beauty salons to lay clients straight down on the table and start putting lashes on in whatever thickness, length and curl they feel like or have available. Many of the more budget salons just apply the exact same set of extensions to every client, totally disregarding their eye shape, lash health and even the look the client is after.

A shy, reserved person who doesn’t wear much makeup could open their eyes to reveal big showgirl lashes that they are quite literally ‘stuck’ with – totally overpowering their whole look and not suiting them at all.

The Only Gold Coast Lash Salon That Promises Not To Damage Your Natural Lashes

We’ve all read and heard horror stories about eyelash extensions…from clumps of glue that rip our your natural lashes to opening your eyes after application and being horrified at the result because your lash extensions look like big fluffy brooms instead of the natural look you were hoping for.

At The Lash Spa, we are SO against spider leg lashes and broom lashes – lashes that fall under that category not only look terrible but are extremely damaging to your natural lashes. The following lashes might look great if you’re into crazy volume, but the reality is that they’ll gradually cause damage to your natural lashes…

How do we apply lashes that don’t cause damage?

At The Lash Spa we only apply extensions suited to your natural lash. This is something we are extremely strict on – it’s called lash health standards and we’re all about them.

We never apply lashes that are too long or too heavy for your natural lash which is the biggest reason your natural lashes can be damaged from eyelash extensions – it causes the natural lash to be pulled out of the eyelid, or snapped off and in really bad cases can cause scarring along the eyelid which can inhibit future lash growth, meaning you’ll have fewer natural lashes for quite a while, and sometimes permanently!

Before we start applying lashes we have a consultation over a lychee iced tea and chocolate where we show photos, identify the right lash style for your personal face and eye shape and the right thickness/length that will best suit you and the natural lashes you already have.

We have a consultation with every new client so you know what you’re getting beforehand and you’ll never end up shocked with big embarrassing lashes – or on the flipside, if you want super volume but your natural lashes are damaged and brittle, we’ll let you know that it’s simply not possible (other salons might do it anyway, knowing that you’ll just end up with more damage).

If your lashes are thick and healthy but don’t have much length we can apply either similar length extensions and add more volume or extending the length of your lashes with less volume.

If you have long lashes but they are not as thick and are fragile you may have to stick with your natural lash length and just think about adding volume.

Don’t go to just any old salon…

Applying extensions takes time and a lot of practice, the most important thing about lash extension is the application. If the extension is attached to 2 or more of your natural lashes your natural lashes get pulled with the growing process pulling 1 or more natural lash out.

What does that all mean?

It means that the end result will be damaged lashes or even worse creating gaps through your lash line. Extensions should always only be applied to one of your natural lashes whether you are applying classics or volume lashes.

Wispy Lashes on the Gold Coast and Where to Get Them

Have you seen those dreamy ‘wispy’ lashes on Pinterest and fallen head-over-heels in love with them?

So have we!

We love wispy lashes at The Lash Spa because we specialise in beautiful, natural lashes that don’t damage your own lashes.

Here’s a photo of wispy lashes (not done by us) but just a good example of a wispy set that demonstrates the look.

In a nutshell, here’s how we create wispy lashes!

We do a row of shorter, full lashes such as 6D full volume lashes in an 8 or 10mm length. We then stagger longer single lashes through and mix long 3d lashes that are thin in diameter.

To achieve the look like the photo we would recommend having a set of full volume lashes and then adding a mini boost of long 3d and single lashes on top.
